Wallace Johnson was a mechanical engineer from California in the United States, and has been accredited by many as creating the markets for Upright scaffold towers, as well as Upright access platforms.

Initially, the idea of Wallace Johnson leading to the innovation of the range of Upright access platforms was a result of the company founder attempting to find a kind of scaffolding which would cope with uneven ground which surrounded his house as he attempted to paint it. Due to the unavailability of such an item, Wallace Johnson designed his own aluminium scaffold tower. The adjustable legs on the tower were an important feature of the design and before long, Upright access platforms were put together.
